ARRINGTON, Va. - Tye River Mitigation Bank has been approved for an additional release of nearly 10,000 riverine credits by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District’s Interagency Review Team (IRT) for work completed and success achieved to date on the project.
The Tye River Mitigation Bank is centrally located on 440 acres inside the fast-growing triangle of Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Staunton, Virginia. This bank will offset unavoidable environmental impacts to streams and riparian areas within its Geographic Service Area (GSA).
Tillman Conservation, LLC, the bank sponsor, has completed more than 28 miles of riparian exclusion fencing, installed more than 40 off-stream water stations for livestock, planted more than 50,000 new trees and shrubs and continuously controlled/monitoring non-native invasive plants within the project site. The Tye River Mitigation Bank is protected in perpetuity to forever contribute to the ecological integrity of this beautiful and historic region of central Virginia.
A new interactive GSA map is available here. The Primary Service area for the bank includes portions of Albemarle, Alleghany, Amelia, Amherst, Buckingham, Chesterfield, Goochland, Greene, Fluvanna, Nelson, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, and Rockbridge Counties.
Mitigation bank credits are the preferred method of providing compensation for the unavoidable loss of jurisdictional Waters of the United States, including riparian buffers under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act.
Trout Headwaters, Inc. based in Livingston, Mont. has been tasked with co-management responsibility for Tillman Conservation, LLC in order to insure successful management and compliance for this important project.
