Tye River Mitigation Bank – Welcome to the Work in Progress

Welcome to Nelson County, Virginia’s, Tye River Mitigation Bank, owned and operated by Tillman Conservation, LLC,.  In accordance with the 2008 Federal Mitigation rule (33CFR Par 32), the Bank has approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (“USACE”) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (“DEQ”) to provide environmentally responsible compensation for the loss of aquatic functions and services of stream resources through authorized impacts to permittees and/or developers.

Tillman Conservation, LLC’s efforts have successfully restored many miles of headwaters to the Tye River.  With the construction of new livestock exclusion fences, off-stream water-stations, the planting of tens of thousands of trees and shrubs and with investment of untold hours into managing invasive species, the Tillman’s have transformed the once historically degraded and de-forested property.   They've done this while improving wildlife habitats and water quality which is evidenced by the clear water flowing now flowing in its tributaries. In recognition of the Tillman’s efforts, The Land Trust of Virginia recently presented Mr. & Mrs. Tillman the “2023 Steward of the Year” award for their demonstration of significant care in the stewardship of their property and its natural and/or historic resources.

These accomplishments have generated more than 20,000 stream mitigation credits in service to multiple watersheds including: Upper James, HUC 02080201; Maury, HUC 02080202; Middle James-Buffalo, HUC 02080203; Rivanna, HUC 02080204; Middle James-Willis, HUC 02080205; Appomattox, HUC 02080207, Lower James, HUC 02080206; and Hampton Roads, HUC 02080208.  Currently, Tye River Mitigation Bank has more than 10,000 stream credits available for project permitting needs.
